Party On. Stay Calm and Breathe. Stay Calm and see what happens. It’s the beginning of a New Year and as you can see, there hasn’t been much happening here at My Write Moment since my post last January 1 about my “Word of the Year,” FOCUS. While I may not have shared stories or updates here on my blog, a lot of writing progress has occurred during 2019 that made the word FOCUS prove to be a good one. While continuing to meet with my two favorite writer friends who made up my previous “small writing group,” I joined another group that meets at the Maple Grove Art Center in Maple Grove, Minnesota as the Maple Grove Writer’s Studio. This group of 6 members welcomed me into their close knit group that had been meeting for many years. Meeting with them every Wednesday from 11-2 has given me the motivation I needed to produce some writing (usually the night before), so that I would have something to read the next day. Some weeks the group would do 20 minute writing sprints using prompts. When we share them, it never ceases to amaze me how all of us can get such a different story out of the same prompt. They are always very good. I really enjoy this talented group of writers and artists.

One of the women in this Writer’s Studio group decided to do the NaNoWriMo challenge this past November. NaNoWriMo means National Novel Writing Month which happens every November. Writers around the world challenge themselves to write 50,000 words in 30 days that could hopefully become the first draft of a novel. Instead of writing a novel, my fellow writer and I decided to use NaNoWriMo as a way to produce short stories using daily prompts. Each morning she would post a prompt (a person and an action) and we would write a story. Some days it was easy, the words made sense together but other days, my mind just went blank. But that’s okay. It was a fun challenge and even though neither of us made it to 50,000 words, we both came away with a few stories that we plan to expand on and improve.

Writing these short prompt stories gave me the idea to revive my blog and use this as a platform for sharing my 20 minute writings and the NaNoWriMo prompts we used last November. My struggle with blogging has always been, “what will I put on it?” I would stress out over whether something was good enough, short enough, long enough, interesting enough until months went by and nothing got put on the blog. This year I’m thinking, Stay Calm and just do it! When I look through my saved work on my laptop, there are a lot of stories waiting to be added here. So Stay Calm and look for some random stories coming soon on My Write Moment. My hope for 2020 is that I will finish some of the stories that have been hanging around half done, either waiting for endings or some sort of direction. Life gives all of us endless topics for writing and while I would like to say I could strive to post here daily or even weekly, I know that is unrealistic for me. Unfortunately, I still have to work. But… I am going to Stay Calm and Breathe, NOT stress about it and enjoy the ride. I hope you find some enjoyment in these prompt stories and some life stories, too.
